Nepal plane with 72 onboard crashed seconds before landing at Pokhara airport     

This article tells of the crash of a passenger plane in Nepal that has killed at least 32 people. - This is the second plane crash to take place in Nepal in the past year. The aircraft crashed today near Pokhara, a tourist town about 200 kilometers (125 miles) west of Kathmandu and close to the country's new Pokhara International Airport. According to an aviation authority official, the plane had been attempting to land at the airport when it crashed into a hillside and caught fire. Hundreds of rescuers have scoured the crash site, and Indian Embassy tweeted that they were sending helicopters to assist with rescue efforts. The newly built airport was due to open later this month but has now been closed indefinitely following Sunday's crash. An official from Nepal's aviation authority said that rescue workers had scoured hundreds of meters of rugged terrain and steep gorge before locating the crash site.

The aircraft, an ATR 42-500 operated by Yeti Airlines, had crashed shortly after taking off from the old airport in Pokhara, a city in central Nepal. The Kathmandu Post reported that the plane was carrying 68 passengers and four crew members when it crashed at 11:20 a.m. local time on Sunday, killing at least 40 people. The flight was being operated by Nepal’s domestic airlines, Yeti Airlines and its subsidiary airlines Sudarshan Airline. Airport spokesperson Prem Nath Thakur said that the plane was headed for Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal from Pokhara International Airport when it crashed about 10 kilometers away from the airport. This is the worst crash to have occurred in nearly five years in Nepal and reportedly killed all 68 passengers and four crew members on board including seven Indians. The captain of the ill-fated plane has been identified as Sudarshan Bartaula while his co-pilot is yet to be identified. 



The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane that was flying from the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu to Pokhara crashed at the airport in Central Nepal's Pokhara. 167 people were on board the aircraft and unfortunately, all of them died in the crash. According to Nepal’s state media, about 72 people have been injured due to this incident. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal expressed his deep sorrow over this “deadliest” government disaster and offered his condolences to the victims’ families. The cause of the accident is yet to be determined but investigations are underway. 

On 12 March 2018, a crashed US Bangla flight from Dhaka, Bangladesh to Kathmandu, Nepal killed 51 people on board. The Nepali carrier Tara Air was operating the plane as part of the Bangla Airlines network. This plane crash is the country's deadliest since March 2012. Reports suggest that 71 people were on board the plane when it was attempting to land at Pokhra International Airport in Nepal and 22 people died in the crash. This accident is a reminder of how aviation safety continues to be an issue for many small Himalayan countries. In addition to Nepalis, there were four Germans, one Chinese and four Indians on board the plane when it crashed.
